Weather in Manaus

Manaus is generally hot and humid and is located three degrees south of the equator. December to March is considered the high season for tourism in Brazil, but the best time to visit Manaus, as well as the Amazon, is from early May to the end of November. The floor of the rain forest becomes extremely cold in the rainy season, especially during the night and when it rains. Manaus, located in the Amazon region, records some of the highest rainfall in the world. The rainy season, which starts in December, continues till late May. During this period the temperatures in Manaus vary in the range of 23°C (73°F) to 30°C (86°F), and frequent rainfall makes travelling exceedingly difficult in these parts. The dry season lasts from July to November with Manaus temperatures from 26°C (78°F) to 40°C (104°F). Short and frequent showers every day are the norm during the rainy season. Manaus gets over 2m (6.5 ft) of rainfall every year. During the rainy season, the level of the river varies from 10 m (33 ft) to 14 m (46 ft). During the rest of the year Manaus receives intermittent showers lasting for one to two hours.

Manaus has an equatorial type of tropical climate, which has no dry season. This type of climate is found in places located at latitudes within five degrees from the equator. Manaus has a mean precipitation value of more than 60mm (2.36 inches of rain). Tropical rainforests are the natural vegetation of the equatorial region. Although Manaus fulfils the technical requirements needed for the “Am”, or monsoon rainforest which is based on the Koppen climate classification, it is a Neotropical area and, therefore, cannot be referred to as a monsoon rainforest.
