Shopping in Manaus

Manaus is an excellent place to shop because it came under the Free Trade Zone during the late 70`s . The products are cheaper here than in other cities of Brazil. The Amazonas Shopping Mall in Manaus is one of the biggest shopping malls in Northern Brazil. Being a free port, there are several shops near the river front selling cheap electronic goods.

Early morning is the best time to visit the Adolfo Lisboa and surrounding City Market. This is the time when the market is full of people and it is a great opportunity to buy handicrafts from the local producers.

Local Handicrafts

Due to the vast cultural diversity found in Amazonas State, the Indian and local handicrafts differ from region to region. Exotic paintings made by the Baniwa, Tukano and Dessana Indians groups, rich tapestry pieces by the Satera-Mauwe Indians, fibers and seed basketry, feather work and ornaments of the Hexykariana tribe, and charming river shells ornaments made by Marubo Indians are sold here. The scales of the pirarucu fish are sold as nail files to be used for manicures; most of the products are also made by the local people who know the way and secrets of the forest.
