Manaus - 2014 World Cup

Manaus won the rights to be one of the 12 host cities of the World Cup 2014, which will be disputed in Brazil. As a representative of the Amazon, the city will be able to show to the world that it is possible to conciliate sustainable development with environmental preservation.

The city of Manausis home to a majority of Soccer clubs in the state of Amazonas and, therefore, several teams like Nacional Soccer Club hold the record for most state titles, but over the last few years Sao Raimundo Sport Club have been drawing national attention with good performances in the Brazil’s Cup. Other traditional teams are Atletico Rio Negro Club, Nacional Fast Club and America Soccer Club.

Vivaldo Lima stadium, also known as the Vivaldão, is the most important soccer stadium in Amazonas and has been hosting the state's decisive matches since its inauguration on 5 April 1970, when the Brazil`s team stopped by Manaus a few days before travelling to Mexico for the 1970 World Cup.

To be one of the host cities of the World Cup of 2014, Manaus will invest in the restoration and expanding of its stadium. Nowadays the Vivaldão Stadium has a capacity for 43 thousand people and after the renovations the capacity will be expanded to 60 thousand seats.

Vivaldão will be modified with areas for sports and entertainment in addition to a mall. The intention is to build a convention center in which the local people may use for sports and leisure with several sports options and departments stores.

The reason for this significant investment in the jungle capital is to promote the Amazon as a touristic destination and show the state’s beauty to the world. And moreover, to promote awareness in other countries about the critical need for environmental preservation.

Other cities to host the World Cup are Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador .
